'Shoot at sight' orders issued

ISLAMABAD, April 29: The Minister of State for Ports and Shipping, Nabeel Gabol, has said that Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Home Minister Zulfiqar Ali Mirza have issued 'shoot at sight' orders to security forces in Karachi. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has ordered an inquiry into the new wave of violence in the city.
 
Talking to Dawn here on Wednesday, Mr Gabol said: "Rangers and other security forces have been ordered to shoot miscreants carrying out indiscriminate firing, killing innocent people and burning public and private property."..

18 of 70 kidnapped security men recovered: ISPR

ISLAMABAD, April 29: Military spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas said at a press briefing here on Wednesday that two 'high-value targets' — Qari Quraish and Maulvi Shahid — were among 50 militants killed during the operation in Buner.

Resolution in Senate on Charter of Democracy

ISLAMABAD, April 29: The Senate adopted a resolution on Wednesday, authorising Chairman Farooq H. Naek to nominate members from all parties to the proposed committee for implementation of the Charter of Democracy (CoD), amid protests by PML-Q which has reservations over various clauses of the CoD.

Magsi urges urgent steps to save Balochistan

Six militants killed in US drone strike

WANA, April 29: A missile attack by a suspected US drone killed six militants, two of them foreigners, in a village in the Ladha sub-division of South Waziristan on Wednesday.
Sources said the militants belonged to the group of Baitullah Mehsud.
 
Local people said that the six were going from Samm area to Asman Manza in a pick-up when the pilotless plane fired two missiles at about 7pm...

PESHAWAR, April 29: The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross,  Jakob Kellenberger, has described the humanitarian situation in the conflict-hit areas of NWFP and Fata as quite serious.
 
He was talking to journalists after inaugurating a 60-bed surgical field hospital here on Wednesday. The hospital has been built and will be run with the support of the Finnish Red Cross. People injured in conflicts in tribal areas, NWFP and parts of Afghanistan are being treated in the hospital. Its capacity will be increased to 100 beds by the end of the year...

US confirms death as swine flu spreads

WASHINGTON, April 29: Virulent swine flu spread to 10 US states from coast to coast on Wednesday and swept deeper into Europe, extending its global reach as the US was hit with the first flu death outside of Mexico, a Mexican toddler who had travelled with his family to Texas.

'Pakistan must be part of solution to Afghan crisis': UK pledges £665m for anti-terror war

LONDON, April 29: Stating that Pakistan must be a part of a solution to Afghanistan's problems, Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Wednesday pledged £665 million over the next four years to help Islamabad with counter-terrorism operations as well as education and economic assistance.

'Single-most direct threat'

ARNOLD (Missouri): Al Qaeda and the Taliban are the "single most direct threat" to US national security, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.
